Lindo's Double Overtime Winner Seals Victory for Women's Soccer

Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – In just her second appearance as a Marlin, Gabrielle Lindo played the role of hero. With time running down in a 1-1, double-overtime game, Lindo corralled a Rory Donahue throw-in just across the midfield line. She then beat her defender down the sideline before cutting in, angling her way to the top of the 18-yard box. With a defender still on her, the freshman slammed the breaks allowing the defender to bypass her. Now one-on-one with a charging keeper, the freshman calmly chipped a ball over the netminder's head to earn a victory with just 66 ticks of the clock left.

That goal helped the Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer team defeat the University of Mary Washington on Saturday night at the Trinder Center. With the win, the Marlins improve to 3-1-2 on the season while the Eagles fall to 1-4-0.

It was not all sunshine for the Marlins though as the team found themselves in a 1-0 hole midway through the first half. In the 72nd minute though, Kennedi Anders was able to knot it all up. Virginia Wesleyan was awarded a free kick a couple yards out from the center of the box. The sophomore lined up and sent a wonderfully placed ball that grazed the keeper's fingertips, hit the post and went in.

The Marlins had a few other opportunites on the day as well. Early in the first half, Carleigh Van Reenen had a breakaway where she was able to beat the keeper with a shot but the ball clanged the crossbar and was played out. Lindo also had a chance to win it in the waning moments of regulation as she ripped a pretty shot to the far post that hit the iron and deflected out.

Tristen Roberts had a solid night between the pipes, finishing with a pair of saves.

Women's soccer returns to action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday as the team heads to Maryland to take on St. Mary's College.
