Women's Basketball Drops ODAC Battle at Home

Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team fell, 71-63, to Hollins Saturday afternoon in the Jane P. Batten Student Center. With the result, the Marlins move to 2-7 on the season while going to 1-3 on conference play. Hollins improves to 4-3 on the season and 2-2 in the ODAC.

Both sides started slow as Hollins opened up all scoring with a 3-pointer nearly 3.5 minutes in. A pair of Jessica Jennings free throws would give the Marlins their first lead at the five-minute mark and the teams would exchange buckets the rest of the quarter. The back and forth action seeped into the second quarter, but a short Hollins run nearing the halftime intermission allowed the visiting team to take a 28-18 into the locker room.

In the third quarter, the Marlins chipped away at the deficit and after a nice Latroya Gravely drive and finish to start the fourth, the Marlins trailed just 48-45. That was as close as they would get though as solid perimeter shooting from Hollins nullified any chance to complete the comeback.

The Marlins led the rebound battle, registering 45 to Hollins' 42. Mak McSweeney dominated the glass, collecting 15 for her second double-digit rebound performance of the year.

Offensively, it was Jennings who led the squad as she finished the day with 16 points and three assists. Right behind her was Sabrina Jones with 10 and McSweeney with eight.

Women's basketball returns to action at 1 p.m. on December 15th as the team hosts Christopher Newport University for the Cross Bay Rivalry game.
