Hayward's PK Punches Women's Soccer Ticket to Finals

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. – The third-seeded Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer team dropped #2 Washington and Lee, 1-0, Saturday afternoon in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) semifinal. With the win, the Marlins improve to 13-3-3 on the year and will now square off against top-seeded Randolph-Macon in the Championship Final. That game will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

After tying 0-0 in the regular season, the battle between the two was very similar in post season play. The only difference was a single goal, scored on a penalty kick in the 26th minute. Teah Lorenzi earned the PK as her cross into the box was batted down by a General hand. That brought senior Marli Hayward to the dot, where she calmly slotted it by the Washington and Lee netminder.

A close game, the Marlins and Generals matched eachother in shots (10-10), while the Marlins had a slight edge in shots-on-target (5-3). Amruta Karkare tallied all 90 minutes in goal for Virginia Wesleyan, turning aside each of the three hots she faced.
