Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The third-seeded Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer team used a last minute goal to drop #6 Shenandoah, 2-1, in the ODAC Championship First Round Wednesday evening played at the Trinder Center. With the win, the Marlins improve to 12-3-3 on the season while the Hornets finish their season at 12-8-0.
With time winding down and the score tied 1-1, it looked as though the game was destined for overtime. Allie Angell thought otherwise though as she scored her first goal of the season. The play began with an inward curling corner kick served up by Mackenzie Kerns. The ball made it over a sea of players before finding the head of Angell, who deflected it back the other way into the net with just 1:10 left in regulation. The Marlins then locked it in for the final moments, securing their spot in the semifinal round.
The pathway there was not easy though as Shenandoah was the first to find their way onto the scoreboard. The Hornets went up 1-0 in the 14th minute as a crossed ball beat Amruta Karkare low. Down 1-0 after the intermission, Mia Meinhardt evened things back up. A beautifully served thru ball by Marli Hayward from midfield allowed Meinhardt to go one-on-one with the approaching keeper. The junior kept her shot low and although the netminder got a finger to it, the ball had enough speed to find its way into the net.
Karkare did well in net, stopping two Hornet shots while picking up her fifth-straight win.
The Marlins will now square off against #2 Washington and Lee in the semifinal. That game will take place at 3 p.m. on Saturday and will be played at top-seeded Randolph-Macon.
