Field Hockey

Early Lead Fails to Hold in Double OT Loss

Box Score

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey was narrowly edged, 3-2, in a double overtime game at Shenandoah Saturday evening. With the result, the Marlins move to 5-11 on the year and 2-4 in conference play. Shenandoah improves to 12-3 on the season (5-1).

It was the Marlins who came out hot, scoring a pair of goals over the first six minutes. Julie Fassl came right out of the gate, finding the back of the goal a mere 1:07 into the contest. Roughly four minutes later, Fassl struck again as she corralled a pass from Ryan Westpfahl and beat the Hornet goaltender. Shenandoah battled back though scoring one later in the quarter. They would then even things at 2-2 with a goal in the third. The Hornet attack continued but Maura Bridges made five saves in the final stanza to push it to OT

In the first overtime period, the Marlins recorded the only shot on goal but it was turned aside. Shenandoah would then score midway through the second to seal the win.

Bridges had a solid outing in net, stopping 10 shots for her third double-digit save total of the season. Emma Walsh also pitched in with a defensive save.

Field hockey returns to action again at 6 p.m. on Thursday for a game under the lights of Birdsong against Randolph-Macon.
