VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University men's soccer team shut out No. 4 Washington and Lee University, 1-0, Saturday evening under the lights of the Trinder Center. With the victory, the Marlins improve to 6-8-0 on the season and 3-2-0 in conference play. The Generals fall to 10-2-2 on the year and are handed their first conference loss (4-1-0).

Facing one of the top teams in the country, the Marlins played low pressure for most of the game weathering six shots in the opening half. Early in the second though, the home team was saw an opportunity to scratch the scoreboard. A foul approximately 10 yards from the half field line was drawn by the Marlins and Matt Campbell spotted up to take the free kick. The sophomore sent a curling ball into the 18-yard box where it reached the head of Matthew Goldberg. The first year player was able to deflect it to the far post, beating the General netminder for the contest's first, and what would be, only goal.

Virginia Wesleyan had perhaps the second best chance to score as earlier in the first half, Will Augsberger rocketed a shot from 35yds out that beat the keeper but rang off the cross bar and out.

The Generals continued to press after that, placing another three shots on target in the second stanza. Griffin Potter stood tall in net, corralling any ball that came near him and finishing with six saves and the shut out.

Men's soccer will return to action again at 7 p.m. on Wednesday as the team travels to Greensboro College for a non-conference match up.
