Virginia Wesleyan men's soccer saw its postseason run come to an end on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 4–1 decision to Franciscan at Foster Field in the ECAC Championship opening round.
Franciscan struck twice in the opening half, scoring in the 16th minute and again in the 29th to take early control. The Barons added a third goal two minutes into the second half before the Marlins were able to pull one back.
Virginia Wesleyan's lone goal came in the 59th minute when Zach Bittler buried a finish off a setup from Nolan Schulte, cutting the deficit to 3–1.
The Marlins nearly gained momentum with an extended stretch of pressure, including quality looks from Mason Wakefield, Ilan Mejia, and Kaden Onolaja, but Franciscan's goalkeeper turned away multiple shots to halt the rally. VWU matched Franciscan in corner kicks (6–6) and finished with 14 shots, six of them on frame.
Franciscan added its fourth goal in the 77th minute to close the scoring.
Freshman goalkeeper Ben Haynes recorded three saves in the match while facing 15 total shots. Ilan Mejia, JaMarhe Wills, and Aaron Deans each generated early first-half chances that forced the Barons' keeper into action.
