Signorelli's Overtime Goal Seals Win Over Shenandoah

Box Score

WINCHESTER, Va. - Just moments into the first overtime period, Scott Signorelli sealed the victory for the Virginia Wesleyan University men's soccer team as they dropped Shenandoah, 2-1, on the road Tuesday evening. A non-conference battle, the Marlins improve to 5-8 on the season while the Hornets drop to 5-9.

Tied 1-1 after 90 minutes of regulation, the Marlins acted quickly in the extra stanza. Earning a corner kick just over a minute in, Collin Innes set up to the goalkeeper's right to take it. He swung one in to the nearpost where a streaking Signorelli used his body to usher the ball to the back of the net.

The Marlins needed a comeback effort to seal up this one as Shenandoah scored first on a penalty kick in the 51st minute. Things grew bleak as time dwindled but Kevin Prophet changed that in the 84th minute. An Innes corner kick was fed into the box where Prophet was able to angle it to the lower left corner, knotting things up at 1-1. The Marlins then had a chance to put things away but a saved penalty kick brought the contest to overtime.

The Marlin dominated the entire game, outshooting their opponents 24-4 (11-3 on goal). Griffin Potter collected the win between the pipes as he stopped all but the PK.

Men's soccer returns to action again at 7 p.m. on Saturday as the team hosts Washington and Lee at the Trinder Center.
