Women's Soccer Swats Wasps at Home

Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer team piled in numerous first half goals helping them earn 7-0 victory over Emory & Henry Saturday afternoon at the Trinder Center. With the victory, the Marlins improve to 8-3-2 on the season and 3-2-0 in conference action. Emory & Henry moves to 2-10-1 on the year and remain winless in ODAC play (0-5-0).

Scoring came easy for the Marlins as the home squad piled in all seven of their goals in the first half. Mia Meinhardt got things going as she drove home a Ryan McCurry centering pass to the far post just 11:06 in. Anna Pedicone then doubled the score just over 12 minutes later. Rory Donahue sent a deep lead ball that Pedicone was able to catch up with. One-on-one with her defender, she used a cut move to gain space before beating the keeper with a hard shot that went off her gloves and in.

It was then Marli Hayward's turn to score as she stole a Wasp outlet pass and took it in on the keeper before calmly making it 3-0 in the 27th minute. Gabrielle Lindo was next to get on the scoresheet as she finished a Reina Araujo cross far post just two minutes later.

Hayward would set up the next goal as she beat her defender and angled a ball in on near post. Araujo beat the keeper to the ball and was able to tap it by her to make it 5-0. Lindo then registered her second of the day as she took a Nicole Stottlemyer pass and sent a looping ball that beat the Wasp keeper far post. Hayward then capped the scoring with another one in the 43rd minute. Emily Wright was credited with the assist as she sent in a cross that Hayward neatly headed into the back of the net.

The Marlin offense was busy as the team racked up 46 shots compared to the Wasps two. They also rang up seven corners while negating any corner chances for the opposition.

Women's soccer returns to action again at 4:40 p.m. on Saturday as the team welcomes Washington and Lee to the Trinder Center.
