Box Score PIKESVILLE, Md. – The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team fought hard in a loss to Stevenson University Friday afternoon, falling 6-3 on the road. With the loss, the Marlins are now 0-1 on the year while the Mustangs go to 1-0.
It was a tale of two halves for the Marlin squad with the team controlling the latter of the two. Going down 4-0 in the first, VWU climbed back in the game with a three-goal rally to cut the deficit to one. In a matter of just five minutes, the Marlins tacked on three goals beginning with a Janine De Perio score assisted by Emily Price 20:21 into the second half. Just under four minutes later, De Perio returned the favor with an assist to Price. Price then added another in her Marlin debut at the 25:22 mark, this time with a helper going to Cori Jackson. The run was cut short though as Stevenson knocked two more in near the end of regulation.
Senior goalie Skye Swain played the majority of time in net, turning aside seven Mustang attempts. She would be relieved by Maura Bridges with just over six minutes to go but the freshman would see no shots.
Field hockey will have a quick turnaround as the team travels to nearby Hood College for 1 p.m. contest on Saturday.
