Lynchburg, VA - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's tennis team fell 5-0 to Randolph College today in Lynchburg.
In doubles, the Marlins had close matches at #2 and #3 dropping both sets 8-6, and 9-8 respectively. At #2 doubles, junior Katie Staman (Lancaster, PA) and senior Kellen Phillips (Alexandria, VA) fell to Lauren Appel and Ashley Schmitz 8-6. At #3, the VWU team of senior Taylor Witherspoon (Fairfax, VA) and junior Kristina Sablestrom (Colorado Springs, CO) jumped out to a 5-2 lead before falling 9-8 to Sarah Mueller and Ranita Sarfo.
In singles, freshman Makayla Velic (Jacksonville, FL) fell to Randolph's Keyu Jin 6-1, 6-0 at #1. At #2 singles, Randolph's Ashley Schmitz defeated VWU freshman Audrey Balley (Nice, France) 7-5, 6-1 clinching the victory for the Wildcats.
With the loss the Marlins fall to 7-6 while Randolph improves to 8-3. VWU will take on Sweetbriar tomorrow at noon in Amhearst, VA.
