Ashland, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's tennis team fell 7-2 to Randolph Macon College on Wednesday afternoon in Ashland.
Randolph Macon jumped out to a 2-1 lead by taking 2 of 3 doubles matches from the Marlins. At #1, freshmen Audrey Bally (Nice, France) and Makayla Velic (Jacksonville, FL) dropped an 8-2 decision to Gaby Tersigni and Kristen Dantzler. At #2, junior Katie Staman (Lancaster, PA) and senior Kellen Phillips fell 8-3 to Stephanie Yeager and Olivia Uzer. With the Marlins down 2-0 the #3 team of junior Kristina Sabelstrom (Colorado Springs, CO) and senior Taylor Witherspoon (Fairfax, VA) outlasted Landon Aud and Sarah Hinson 9-7 to put the Marlins on the board heading into singles. It was the 7th win on the season for Sabelstrom and Witherspoon.
In singles, the Marlins battled hard but were only able to claim one singles match. At #2, the Marlins Audrey Bally defeated Stephanie Yeager 6-4, 6-3. At #1 singles, Makayla Velic fell to Gaby Tersigni 6-1, 6-3 while Katie Staman dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Kristin Dantzler at #3. The closest matches of the day came from the 4-6 spots. At #4, Kristina Sabelstrom fell in a tight 6-4, 7-6 battle to Landon Aud. At #5, Kellen Phillips battled back after dropping the first set 6-3, but came up just short in a 6-3, 7-5 decision to Olivia Uzer. The last match to finish for the day came at the #6 spot where Taylor Witherspoon fell to Sarah Hinson 7-5, 6-4.
With the loss the Marlins fall to 8-7 while the Yellow Jackets improve to 7-3 on the season. VWU will travel to Roanoke on Saturday to take on the Maroons. Match time is set for 3 PM.
