Virginia Beach, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University women's tennis team fell 8-1 to the #9 (South Atlantic region) Centre College on Monday afternoon at the Everett Tennis Center.
The Marlins who were coming off a 9-0 win over Shenandoah started off the match by dropping all 3 doubles positions. At #3 doubles the Marlins team of senior Taylor Witherspoon (Fairfax, VA) and junior Kristina Sabelstrom (Colorado Springs, CO) were down 5-0 before gaining traction and clawing their way back in the match but eventually dropped the set 8-5 to Centre's Mackanzie Snow and Emma Ramsey.
In Singles, Sablestrom continued to battle as she was the only Marlin to claim their court with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #6 over Emma Ramsey. At #5 singles, senior Kellen Phillips (Alexandria, VA) battled hard but came up just short in a 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 loss to Mackanzie Snow.
The Marlins fall to 6-3 on the year while the Colonels improve to 5-7. VWU women's next opponent will be Frostburg State in a contest scheduled for Thursday March 22nd. Match time is set for 3:30 PM at the Everett Tennis Center.
