Virginia Beach, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's tennis team defeated Shenandoah University 9-0 on Saturday at the Everett Tennis Center.
The Marlins came out strong by sweeping all 3 doubles positions. At 1 doubles, freshmen Audrey Bally (Nice, France) and Makayla Velic (Jacksonville, FL) earned a hard fought 9-7 win over the Shenandoah's Fuqua and Hansen. Junior Katie Staman (Lancaster, PA) and freshman Courtney Simmons (Reevesville, SC) claimed the #2 spot 8-2 while senior Taylor Witherspoon (Fairfax, VA) and junior Kristina Sabelstrom (Colorado Springs, CO) took #3 8-1.
In singles the match of the day was on court one where the Marlin's Makayla Velic fought out of a 5-7, 0-5 hole only to gain composure and traction to come back and win the match 5-7, 7-5, 10-8. At #3 singles, Katie Staman also had to come back to win her line 6-7, 6-2, 10-5 over Madison Hasen.
With the win the Marlins improve to 6-2 on the year. They will take on the South Atlantic Region's #9 team Center College on Monday 3/19 at 3:30 PM at the Everett Tennis Center. The match was moved up from Wednesday due the potential for inclement weather on Wednesday.
