Virginia Beach, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's tennis team went 2-0 on Saturday by defeating Penn State Abington and Guilford College 8-1 and 9-0 respectively.
In the morning match against Penn State Abington, the freshman doubles team of Makayla Velic and Audrey Bally took #1 doubles 8-3 leading the Marlins to a 2-1 advantage heading into singles. In singles action, both Velic and Bally won in straight sets at #1 and #2 respectively. Junior Katie Staman battled through a hard fought 7-5, 6-4 win at #3 singles while both Taylor Witherspoon and Jackly Cheely only dropped 4 games collectively in route to straight set wins at #4 and #5 singles respectively.
In the afternoon match against conference opponent Guilford College the Lady Marlins continued their dominant play losing only 5 games collectively in 9 matches played. VWU opened up the match by sweeping all three courts 8-0, 8-1 and 8-1. In singles, Katie Staman, Freshman Courtney Simmons and sophomore Kristina Sabelstrom each defeated their opponents 6-0, 6-0 on courts #3, #4 and #6 respectively. Senior Kellen Phillips earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory at #5 singles in her first match back after finishing her basketball season.
With the win the Marlins improve to 4-1 on the young season. Their next match will be this upcoming Tuesday at home against Pikeville University. Match time is set for 3PM.
