Virginia Beach, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's tennis team went 1-1 on Saturday by defeating Penn State Abington 9-0 before falling to ODAC foe Guilford College 7-2.
In the morning match against Penn State Abington, the Marlins took a commanding 3-0 lead after doubles by taking all 3 courts 8-3, 8-1 & 8-0 respectively. In singles action, VWU dropped just 13 games collectively in route to their 9-0 victory. Freshman Mitch Perry, Sophomore Andreas Combos and Freshman Ishan Chatterjee each won 6-0, 6-0 at #2, #3 and #5 singles.
In the afternoon match the Marlins played host to the ODAC preseason #2 Guilford Quakers. The Marlins opened up with solid doubles play and battled hard in each spot. At #1 doubles, the team of Paul Gladstone and Mitch Perry traded multiple breaks of serve before falling in a closely contested 9-7 decision. The Marlins also fell short at #2 and #3 doubles 8-3.
In singles action, sophomore Andreas Combos claimed the first team point for the Marlins with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Guilford's Elijaj Gregory at 3 singles. Meanwhile at #5 singles freshman Ishan Chatterjee defeated Kai Glass 6-2, 7-6.
After going 1-1 on the day the Marlins find themselves at 1-3 on the young season. Next up for the Marlins will be a home contest on Tuesday March 13th against NAIA Pikeville University. Match time is set for 3 PM.
