The Virginia Wesleyan University men's tennis team rallied from an early deficit to defeat Salisbury, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon in a tightly contested match. After being swept in doubles play, the Marlins responded with a dominant showing in singles, winning four of six matches to secure the comeback victory.
Salisbury opened the match by taking all three doubles points. Jed Platts and Hovo Madanyan dropped a 6-3 decision at No. 1, while Natan Aerts and Josh Buckland fell by the same score at No. 2. The closest contest came at No. 3, where Veikko Sivonen and Frieso ter Schiphorst pushed their opponents to a tiebreak but ultimately came up short, 7-6.
Trailing, Virginia Wesleyan needed a near sweep in singles and delivered with a composed and determined effort across the lineup. Jed Platts ignited the comeback at No. 1 singles with a hard-fought three-set victory. After dropping the opening set 6-4, Platts responded with a 6-2 second set before closing out the match with a 7-5 win in the decisive third set.
The Marlins continued to build momentum at No. 2, where Veikko Sivonen earned a straight-sets victory, 6-2, 6-4, to bring Virginia Wesleyan closer. Sebastien Muller followed with one of the most dominant performances of the day at No. 3, cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 win.
With the match hanging in the balance, Josh Buckland delivered the clinching point at No. 6 singles. Buckland controlled play from the start and secured a 6-2, 6-2 victory to complete the Marlins' comeback and seal the 4-3 team win.
