The Virginia Wesleyan University Men's Tennis team battled throughout the lineup, showing resilience and flashes of strong play despite a 5-2 road loss to Randolph College.
The Marlins opened the afternoon with a strong effort in doubles, highlighted by a clutch performance at the top spot.
Ayaan Choudhary and
Jed Platts edged out a 7-6 win in a tightly contested tiebreak, setting an early tone. While Virginia Wesleyan couldn't secure the doubles point, dropping decisions at No. 2 and No. 3, the group showed the ability to compete point-for-point across all three courts.
In singles, the Marlins continued to fight, with several matches turning into close battles. Choudhary pushed through a competitive opening set at No. 1 before falling in straight sets, while Platts followed a similar path at No. 2, keeping his second set within reach late.
One of the most compelling matches of the day came at No. 3, where Veikko Sivonen rebounded from a first-set loss to dominate the second and force a decisive third. He remained within striking distance throughout, narrowly missing out in a 6-4 final set.
Virginia Wesleyan found success in the lower half of the lineup. Natan Aerts delivered a steady performance at No. 5, controlling both sets in a 6-4, 6-2 win. Josh Buckland matched that effort at No. 6, turning in a composed straight-set victory by the same scoreline to give the Marlins their second point.
At No. 4, Sebastien Muller showed resilience in a match that featured momentum swings before ending early due to retirement, with both players having claimed a set.
