Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball picked up a win on the raod Wednesday night as the squad downed Randolph, 58-46. With the victory, the Marlins go to 10-12 overall and 7-6 in conference action. Randolph moves to 5-16 on the season and 2-11 in ODAC play.
The Marlins got the night started nicely, holding their opponent to just seven points in the opening stanza. The solid play continued into the second frame as the team outscored the Wildcats by five, earning them a 28-18 lead going into the half. Randolph did not back away though, producing 17 points after halftime, inching to within one possession of the Marlins. VWU halted the comeback attempt though, eventually pulling away with its seventh conference victory of the season.
One of the main reasons for the victory was Jayla Harris, who turned an impressive 27 points. The junior guard went 8-15 from the field and hit all eight of her attempts from the charity stripe. With the 27 points, slides up to sixth all-time in Virginia Wesleyan history (1,288 points).
Helping out Harris was NiAsia Caldwell, who nabbed 12 points from off the bench.
Women's basketball returns to the court at 2 p.m. on Saturday as the team hosts Eastern Mennonite. The squad will also be recognizing its upper classmen as it is Senior Day.
