Women's Basketball Narrowly Edged In ODAC Championship Semis

Box Score

SALEM, Va. - The 6th-seeded Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team was narrowly edged by #2 Randolph-Macon in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) semifinal matchup Saturday afternoon at the Salem Civic Center. The Marlins finish their season at exactly .500, posting a record of 14-14.

Much like the Marlins' quarterfinal contest, this one was close all the way up to the final buzzer. VWU found itself up quick as a Jayla Harris jumper put the team up 7-2 just under three minutes in. The squad doubled up the Yellow Jackets at the 6-minute mark as Reagan Holmes splashed home a three, as the score read 12-6. R-MC never let go though, tying it 17-17 after one period.

The second quarter mimicked the first as the Marlins pushed out to a small lead but Randolph -Macon never let them get too far ahead. VWU would take a 33-31 lead though, into the locker room. In the third the lead was traded back-and-forth with the Marlins coming out slightly on top, 52-50.

In the fourth it was a one-possession game all the way down to the 1:10 mark, when two Yellow Jackets free throws put them up four. Randolph-Macon would go up by as much as five in that last minute but undiscouraged a Jaelyn Washington layup cut it down to three with just 16 ticks on the clock. The Marlins then forced the necessary turnover but were unable to convert, eventually falling.

Opposite of last game, the team's top performers came from off the bench. Senior NiAsia Caldwell racked up a team-high 22 points on the year while reserve Jada Lewis corralled 12 rebounds to set a new career-high.

Also pitching in on the night was Harris and Holmes who hit 12 and 11, respectively, and Raya Berkley who nabbed seven boards.
