Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The sixth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team downed #11 Randolph in the First Round of the ODAC Championship Monday evening in the Jane P. Batten Student Center. With the win the Marlins go to 13-13 on the year and will travel to the Salem Civic Center in Salem Va. to take on the #3 Hornets. This quarterfinal matchup will take place at 8 p.m. on Thursday.
After an even first quarter that ended 13-11 in the Marlins favor, Randolph began to string some offense together, going on a 12-1 run that lasted over the last minute of the opening stanza and down to the 4:40 mark of the second. The Marlins were able to halt the run though to put up one of their own as they finished out the half scoring 11 unanswered to take a 25-21 lead into the locker room
VWU came out hot after the intermission, shooting over 50% from the field including six points from Jayla Harris in the third. Reagan Holmes, who recorded six of her own from two threes, continued to drain from long range in the fourth, sinking three more to put away the Wildcats.
Holmes and Harris would both finish the game with 18 total points. That would tie a career-high for Holmes, with her six made 3-pointers also setting a career-high. Harris on the other hand keeps moving up the record books as she slid into third place in Virginia Wesleyan history in total points (1,351).
Rebounding was a group effort led by Raya Berkley, Naeemah Morris and Jaelyn Washington who each tallied six. The starting five (those three including Harris and Holmes), accounted for 32 of the team's 37 boards.
