Box Score WINCHESTER, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team used a strong second half to steal a road victory from Shenandoah Wednesday evening, downing the Hornets 60-47. With the win, the team breaks even on the year 12-12 and goes to 9-6 in conference play. Shenandoah moves to 11-13 overall (7-8 ODAC).
After putting up just 19 points of offense through the first two periods, the Marlins exploded for 41 points in the second half. Down 24-19 after 20 minutes, the squad began to gain a little traction in the third. A 12-5 over the last 4:35 of the stanza was kicked off by a Jayla Harris jump shot followed by two made free throws.
Down one score going into the final quarter, Harris took off as she scored 17 of the squads 23 total points. The junior went 5-for-7 from the field in the last 10 minutes and a perfect 6-for-6 from the line to help the Marlins seal a big conference victory.
Harris led all scorers on the day, recording 25 total and 22 in the second half. Reagan Holmes also pitched in with 10 points of her own.
Rebounding was a team effort on the evening, with five different Marlins coming away with five boards.
Women's basketball will return to the hardwood at 4:30 p.m. on Friday as the squad squares off in a road battle with Guilford in the regular season finale.
