Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team earned its second-straight ODAC victory as it downed Shenandoah, 70-56, Wednesday evening in the Jane P. Batten Student Center. With the victory, the Marlins move to 6-10 on the year and 3-4 in conference play. Shenandoah goes to 7-9 overall and 3-4 in the ODAC.

It was a collective effort from the Marlins on the evening, with what seemed a different player stepping up to the plate each quarter. In the first it was leading-scorer Jayla Harris, who finished opening 10 minutes with five points, a rebound and an assist. NiAsia Caldwell came alive for the Marlins in the second stanza, sinking a pair of threes and filling up the scoresheet with two boards, two assists, a block and a steal. After the half, the team fell flat for a bit but Sierra Coleman changed that. Coming off the bench the freshman forward nabbed two big offensive boards while also converting an "and-1" opportunity. In the final period, Reagan Holmes came alive, going a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and finishing with 12 points.

In all, the Marlins shot the ball the best they have all year, recording season highs in field goal percentage (46.9), 3-point percentage (62.5) and free throw percentage (87.5). Harris and Holmes led the squad as each turned in an 18-point night. Caldwell would aid the effort with 14 of her own.

Possesion was also a big part of the gameplan for Coach Dunmyer's team. The squad recorded 15 assists while turning the ball over just 13 times, marking the second-time that ratio has been above 1.0 all year. Leading the charge was Holmes with five dimes. She was aided by Raya Berkley, Caldwell and Harris who all notched three.

Virginia Wesleyan played a sound defensive game as well. From 4:54 in the second quarter to 4:43 in the third, the Marlins held the Hornets scoreless. As a team, VWU outrebounded Shenandoah by ten boards (38-28). Leading the front underneath was Naeemah Morris, who collected eight total.

Women's basketball returns to the court on at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday as the team hosts Randolph. The game also comes with significant meaning as the Marlins remember Nancy Kelly in the second annual "Nancy Kelly Game."
