Marlins Use Balanced Scoring Effort to Race past Methodist

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Seven different players scored for the Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer team Friday night as the Marlins routed Methodist 9-1 in the first match of the CNU Captains Classic.

Marli Hayward continued her hot streak with a score just three minutes in after beating a defender one-on-one. She was responsible for both Virginia Wesleyan goals on Tuesday night.

The Marlins added another goal in the first 10 minutes when Anna Pedicone ripped a long shot from the right side outside the box.

Virginia Wesleyan held the 2-0 lead until the second half when the Marlins posted an incredible seven goals in a 45 minute period.

Alex Davidson scored a pair of goals in the first three minutes of the second half to put VWU up 4-0. Davidson then assisted on a goal by Pedicone at the 54:14 mark to put the Marlins up 5-0. It was the first multi-score game of Pedicone's career.

Ryan Applewhite played a role in the next two goals, scoring off a long ball sent up the middle by Zoe Traficante. Applewhite found Allie Angell at 59:09 for the Marlins' seventh goal of the game.

Teah Lorenzi and Sarah Heinbaugh scored the first goals of their careers late in the second half for the final VWU margin.

Virginia Wesleyan led 25-6 in shots, and 8-1 in corner kicks. The Marlins forced Maggie Hunt to make eight saves for Methodist.

Alicia Zamora (1-0) started in goal for the first time in her VWU career. She made two saves for the victory.

Virginia Wesleyan (1-2-1) faces Cal Lutheran on Sunday at 4 p.m. to conclude action at the CNU Captains Classic. The match was originally scheduled for 1:30 p.m., but was moved to accomodate travel for Methodist University. MU is facing a potential closure due to Hurricane Irma.
