Fassl Leads Marlins to 3-1 Victory over Wolverines

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Freshman Julie Fassl continued her hot streak, scoring a pair of goals as the Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team defeated Wesley College 3-1 on Wednesday.

Fassl scored twice on Wednesday. She has now scored seven goals in the last four matches, three of those being multi-goal efforts. She started the scoring in the 14th minute when she hammered home a shot from the top of the circle.

Wesley rallied early in the second half when Kaila Hindt stepped in from a penalty corner, deflecting in a ricochet off the stick of Morgan Gannon.

Virginia Wesleyan did a good job of fending off Wesley penalty corners as the Wolverines attempted 10 on the afternoon. The Wolverines managed just eight shots in the match, having multiple penalty corners coming away empty.

The Marlins capitalized for the game-winning tally on a penalty corner at 47:09. Hunter Majewski took the corner, sending it to Fassl at the top of the circle for the quick shot that found the back of the cage.

Taylor Abraszek added an insurance tally just 41 seconds later when she dribbled up the left side of the field and into the circle for the 3-1 advantage.

Virginia Wesleyan was incredibly accurate on the afternoon, putting 16 of 18 shots on cage. Eleven of those were saved by Wesley (1-6) keepers, including nine from starter Sidney Knott.

Virginia Wesleyan (4-3) returns home on Tuesday to face St. Mary's (Md.) (3-5) for a non-conference contest at 5 p.m.
