Cardinals Fly past Marlins in Season Opener

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Catholic University scored two goals in each half Friday night to defeat the Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer team 4-0 on the first day of the Atlantic Orthopaedic Tournament.

Elizabeth Johnson started the scoring for Catholic at the 4:14 mark when she finished off a loose ball in the box that resulted from multiple blocked shots.

Catholic tacked on another score late in the period when Taylor Pisk finished off a rebound to make it 2-0 at the 38:52 mark.

Similar to the first half, Catholic scored quickly off the opening whistle when Andrea Jablonskyj found Bridget Buckley just 3:30 out of intermission. Johnson scored her second goal of the day late in the half to finish off the Cardinal scoring.

Katie Roberts and Marli Hayward attempted two shots each. Taylor Chapman (0-1) made three saves in goal while Alicia Zamora added another.

Christina Peyroux (1-0) stopped both shots she faced for Catholic (1-0).

Virginia Wesleyan (0-1) hosts No. 5 Trinity (Tx.) (0-1) at 8 p.m. Saturday to conclude play in the Atlantic Orthopaedic Tournament.
