Women Stumble at Lynchburg

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The VWC women's tennis team absorbed an 8-1 defeat at the hands of Lynchburg College on Sunday.

The ODAC foe was able to claim all three of the doubles matches, and carried that momentum through the singles portion of the afternoon. At second doubles, junior Kellen Phillips and sophomore Katie Staman pushed their opponents to the brink before succumbing by a score of 8-5.

The move into singles saw more competitive tennis throughout the lineup. Junior Kellen Phillips, in only her second match of the season, saw noticeable strides and improvement in confidence in playing a very strong opponent to a 6-3, 6-2 score.

The highlight of the afternoon came from Katie Staman at second singles, who played a very steady and smart match en route to a convincing 6-3, 6-0 victory.

"I was really happy with the match that Katie put together today," said assistant coach Christian Nagy. "Her composure on big points was outstanding; she deserves a ton of credit today."

Virginia Wesleyan (1-8/0-3) travels to Hollins University (2-9/1-5) Saturday for a 2 p.m. ODAC contest.
