Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team fell, 90-55, on New Year's Eve in the Jane P. Batten Student Center. With the loss, the Marlins move to 3-8 on the year while the Captains improve to 10-1.
The first quarter was a neck-and-neck battle with both teams applying presses to pressure their opponent. VWU found itself up 10-6 late in the stanza after a Ceci Billings jumper from the wing, but CNU found its way back and took a 17-16 lead into the first intermission.
Despite being down 10 at half, the Marlins held with the Captains for a majority of the first 20 minutes. The second half told a different story though, as Christopher Newport's press became tough to handle. The Captains would pull away eventually sealing their 10th victory of the year.
Once again, Jayla Harris was the Marlins' top scorer, cashing in 21 on the evening. She was aided by NiAsia Caldwell (12) and Naeemah Morris (9).
Caldwell and Harris also racked up the boards for VWU, collecting six and five, respectively.
Women's basketball returns to the court at 7 p.m. on Wednesday as the team hosts Bridgewater for a bit of ODAC action.
