Box Score Marlins Win OT Battle of Top ODAC Teams
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Senior Zoe Traficante scored her first goal of the year in overtime to defeat visiting Bridgewater College 2-1 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action Wednesday night. Both teams entered the contest with a 5-1 record in ODAC play.
The match got off to a slow start as the first shot on goal did not come until the 38th minute in what would be a scoreless first half.
The Eagles got on the board first with a 64th minute goal from senior Keri Rager that was rocketed just out of the reach of keeper Alicia Zamora.
The Marlins answered back in the 71st minute when freshman Mia Meinhardt scored her third goal of the season.
After 20 minutes of back and forth physical play, the match headed into golden goal extra time.
It took just four minutes for the Marlins to end the game with a goal from Traficante that rolled past Hayley Talbott.
Virginia Wesleyan held a 20-7 edge in shots over Bridgewater with a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Zamora made one save for the Marlins while Talbott registered five stops for Bridgewater (12-3-1/5-2)
Virginia Wesleyan (10-5-1/6-1) hosts Emory & Henry College (4-9-1/3-3-1) on Saturday at 1 p.m. looking to extend a five-match ODAC winning streak.
