Marlins Draw with No. 8 Lynchburg

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College women's soccer team posted a tremendous defensive effort to finish in a scoreless draw with No. 8 Lynchburg College on Wednesday night in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.

This is the fourth ranked opponent the Marlins have faced in their first eight games, going 1-2-1 against those squads. VWC has not lost to a ranked opponent from Virginia, tying the Hornets and defeating Christopher Newport, ranked No. 11 at the time.

Lynchburg held an 8-1 first-half edge in shots but neither goalie was tested until after intermission.

The second half started with an onslaught of action in the first four minutes. Marli Hayward put a shot on goal that was saved by a diving Tess Frelick.

The Hornets responded with an offensive drive of their own as Kennedy Jakubek and Samantha Bagherpour ripped shots just 12 seconds apart, each saved by Taylor Chapman.

The Marlins flipped the field following Chapman's second save as Catherine Galway forced another shot on Frelick, with another save registered on the scoreboard.

In total, Chapman made five saves in the second half while Frelick ended with three.

Virginia Wesleyan had the best opportunities in the extra session, but shots by Annie Hartman and Katie Roberts were both saved. Lynchburg had a pair of chances in the second overtime period, but Chapman saves turned away LC and secured the draw.

Chapman finished with six saves while Frelick ended with five for No. 8 Lynchburg (6-0-2/1-0-1).

Virginia Wesleyan (4-3-1/1-0-1) travels to Emory & Henry College (3-6/0-1) for a 7:30 p.m. ODAC match on Friday.
