Marlins Win ODAC Opener at Randolph

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan College women's soccer team played a good match against Randolph College in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener Saturday, coming out on top 1-0.

The Marlins kept pressure on Randolph throughout the first half, ripping 10 shots, putting six on goal that were saved by Quinn-Lynn Bates.

Randolph was held in check by the Marlin defense as VWC limited the hosts to just two shots in the first half, ending with six total.

The Marlins were able to take the lead in the second half after a penalty kick was awarded after a hand ball in the box was called by the official.

Bates stopped the shot by Zoe Traficante, but the saved shot bounced off the post and into the goal.  The Marlins had another opportunity to add on to the lead late on a penalty kick try, but the kick hit the post and was sent away by Randolph.

Bates finished with 11 saves for Randolph (0-5-1/0-1) while Taylor Chapman stopped three shots to earn the shutout for Virginia Wesleyan.

Virginia Wesleyan (3-3/1-0) hosts No. 8 Lynchburg College (6-0-1/1-0) Wednesday at 7 p.m. in an ODAC contest.
