Box Score Marlins Fall in Defensive Struggle with No. 23 Rowan
GLASSBORO, N.J. -- The only goal of the game on Saturday evening was a penalty kick as No. 23 Rowan University defeated the Virginia Wesleyan College women's soccer team 1-0 on Saturday evening.
Shots were fairly even in the first half as Virginia Wesleyan maintained a narrow 4-3 edge in shots with neither team attempting a corner kick.
The Marlins put three shots on goal in the first 20 minutes, but each was saved by Shelby Money. Rowan had its first look at goal in the 24th minute when Melissa Kelly ripped a shot that was saved by Taylor Chapman.
The only score of the game came at 72:11 when a Virginia Wesleyan foul in the box resulted in a penalty kick try for Rowan. Kelly took the attempt and found the back of the net for the lone score of the game.
Money finished with eight saves for Rowan (7-0) while Chapman corralled a pair of stops for the Marlins.
The Marlins had an edge in shots, 13-7, and corner kicks, 2-1.
Virginia Wesleyan (2-3) travels to Randolph College Saturday for a 1 p.m. Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) start.
