Box Score Marlins Clip Panthers, 3-2, in Home Opener
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Senior Asiah Allen took part in all three goals on Thursday afternoon as the Virginia Wesleyan College field hockey team defeated Ferrum College 3-2 in the Marlins' home opener.
Ferrum got on the scoreboard first at 5:50 when Haley Overstreet drove towards the keeper to draw her out of the cage, before chipping it over to Destanee Cutler for the finish. Cutler's goal was the first shot of the game for the Panthers, but the guests would go on to be outshot 28-5.
The Marlins answered at 18:19 when Allen ended up with the ball off a penalty corner, smacking a pass in front of the cage where Ashley Parker deflected it home.
Allen scored again at 25:10 on an unassisted try to put the home team up 2-1.
Allen helped provide an insurance tally in the second half when she found Elizabeth Roberto on another pass into the circle.
The Marlins controlled the Ferrum offense throughout the match, limiting the guests to just one shot in the second half, a goal by Alicia Jones off a Sierra Magdaleno assist. Virginia Wesleyan also held a 20-2 edge in penalty corners.
Courtney Gosselin stopped 15 shots for Ferrum (0-5). Samantha Hollenzer won the match in her first career collegiate appearance, stopping two shots. Emma Walsh also collected her career defensive save in the win.
Virginia Wesleyan (2-2) hosts Frostburg State (2-2) Saturday for a noon opening whistle.
