Box Score Hayward Goal Pushes VWC Over CNU 1-0
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College senior midfielder Annie Hartman slipped a pass past the Captains' last line of defense where it was played by freshman Marli Hayward for the game's lone goal in a 1-0 non-conference victory over Christopher Newport University Wednesday night.
It took until there was just over two minutes to play that Hartman found Hayward for that one-on-one with the goalkeeper which resulted in Hayward taking a shot on the left side of the goal that went in.
A stalemate turned into Marlin victory late in the game. The first half did not see that much action from either side of the ball. The one shot on goal by Christopher Newport was a miss-hit ball that ended up barely dribbling to the keeper.
Wesleyan came out fired up in the second half with multiple scoring opportunities early in the second half. Three shot on goal chances by the Marlins were halted by the Captains. With less than six minutes in the game, Wesleyan took three more shots on goal. One with 5:30 remaining, which was a 30-yard strike by Hartman. Another with 4:29 remaining, Ryan McCurry lets a shot loose towards the goal but it ended up getting rejected by the keeper for the captains. The third was the goal punched in by Hayward.
CNU had two shots on goal all night, the first was mentioned earlier. The second was taken with 10:32 left in regulation a ball was crossed by the Captains Sydney Rife and flicked on by Victoria Perry, but the ball bounced off the left post.
Virginia Wesleyan out shot CNU 10-6.
