Men's Tennis Wraps Up Regular Season at Chowan
MURFREESBORO, N.C. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College men's tennis team finished its regular season Monday with an 8-1 loss to Division II Chowan University.
The Hawks came out of the gate strong in doubles sweeping the Marlins 8-3, 8-3 and 8-5 respectively at the No. 1, 2, and 3 doubles positions.
The Marlins were able to claim the No. 5 singles position to avoid being swept for the first time this season when junior Brenden Kelleher defeated Yeh 1-6, 7-6, 10-5. Junior Kenny Downing was able to take the first set at No. 2 singles but dropped the second set and match tie breaker 4-6, 7-5, 10-4.
The loss snaps the Marlin's 10-match win streak.
"Chowan is a solid team who will most likely earn their way into NCAA postseason play. I'm hopeful that today's experience will somehow benefit our guys as they head into the ODAC Championships as the No. 1 seed," said head coach Marty Perry of the 8-1 loss.
Chowan improves to 18-6 on the year as the Marlins fall to 15-6. Next up for the Marlins will be an ODAC quarterfinal match which is scheduled for Sunday against Lynchburg College. The match will take place at the Everett Tennis Center with the time still to be announced.
