Women's Tennis Improves to 2-1 in ODAC play
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College women's tennis team improved its record to 3-3 and 2-1 in the ODAC, with a 5-3 win over Randolph College on Saturday afternoon at Centre Court Racquet Club in Newport News. Since the match was held inside due to rain and on fewer than six courts it was played to decision.
In doubles, the Marlins went up 2-1 after Mia Proctor and Kellen Phillips captured No. 2 8-2. Playing in their first match as a doubles team, first-year Jacklyn Cheely and Abby Horgan captured No. 3 with an 8-2 win.
In singles, senior Mia Proctor gutted out a three-set win over senior Dina Velazco 6-3, 1-6, 10-6. Also claiming singles victories for the Marlins were No. 6 Sam Jackson and No. 5 Jacklyn Cheely, Cheely's match was the deciding match for the Marlins, securing them the victory and propelling the team to a 2-1 mark in ODAC play.
Next up for the Marlins will be a 1 p.m. Sunday match vs. Bridgewater College.
