Virginia Wesleyan Drops Close Contest to Carleton College, 5-4
HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College men's tennis team fell 5-4 on Wednesday to Carleton College, the No. 10-ranked team in the Central Region on Wednesday at Hilton Head High School.
The Marlins came out of the gate quickly, going up service breaks early in all three doubles matches. The solid doubles play continued for the Marlins on all courts as VWC was able to take a 3-0 lead heading into singles over the ranked Knights.
Carleton's No. 1, 2, 3 and 5 singles players proved to be too much for the Marlins as they went on to capture team points at each position in straight sets, giving them a 4-3 lead. Senior Drew Tomajczyk managed to take a set at No. 4 singles and forced a team-match deciding third-set tiebreaker. Prior to Tomajczyk's third set breaker began, Marlin senior Tyler Chang took the No. 6 singles position with a 3-6, 6-3, 13-11 win. The win knotted the team score at 4-4 as Tomajczyk started his deciding tiebreaker. Both players played solid points throughout but in the end Carleton was able to take the deciding match 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.
With the loss the Marlins fall to 5-3 on the season and will face the No. 11 team in the Central Region, Oberlin College at 7pm at Chaplin Park on Hilton Head Island.
