Key Singles Victories Seal Win for Marlins
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College women's tennis team earned their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win of the year today with a 5-4 victory over Hollins University at the Everett Tennis Center. With the win, the Marlins even their record to 2-2 on the young season.
In doubles action, the team of Mia Proctor and Kellen Phillips continue dominate The pair have only given up four games in two matches and put the Marlins on the board today with a 8-2 win. At No. 1 doubles, Jackie Lee and Katie Staman continue to put together strong showings as they improved their record to 3-1 on the year with a tough 8-5 victory at the top spot. The No. 3 doubles team of Abby Horgan and Francesca Lanuza dropped a close 8-5 match in their first appearance of the year as a team.
"Today in doubles all three teams competed hard and played without fear. We came out of the gate strong and showed a lot of confidence at all three spots.", said first year head coach Marty Perry.
In singles, the Marlins cashed in wins from No. 1 Mia Proctor, No. 2 Jackie Lee and No. 6 Sam Jackson to seal the 5-4 win to earn their first ODAC victory of the year. Proctor dominated her opponent from the beginning and was the first to clinch a singles point with a 6-0, 6-2 win. The 2nd point came form Senior and first year tennis player Sam Jackson. The match was only Sam's 2nd opportunity playing in the top 6 and her first career victory. It was a huge 6-2, 6-4 win that pushed the Marlins to 4th team point.
Clinching the match for the Marlins was 2nd year Jackie Lee. After a close first set where she had to come back and push the set into a breaker, Lee relaxed and went on the dominate the 2nd set with punishing forehands leading to a 7-6, 6-0 match clinching win.
"Jackie played tight in the first set and did a great job of hanging around until she got a handle on her forehand. She did an outstanding job of handling the pressure of being the deciding match," said head coach Marty Perry of Jackie's performance.
The Marlins have a quick turnaround as they host the University of Texas-Dallas Comets tomorrow at 2:30 pm at the Everett Tennis Center.
