No. 10 CNU Races Past Virginia Wesleyan

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The No. 10 Christopher Newport University held advantages in several key categories to race past Virginia Wesleyan College 81-51 in non-conference action Friday night.

Sophomore Jayla Harris kept the Marlins in contention by scoring a game-high 31 points. It was the third-most points scored by an opponent in Freeman Center history, with the record set at 36 points in one game.

Harris had an impressive stat line, going 11-for-19 from the field and 5-of-7 from three-point range. She made all four of her free throw attempts, pulled down three rebounds, and registered two steals.

CNU took advantage of a 52-32 rebounding advantage, and the Captain bench outscored the Marlins 30-6, with all six Marlin bench points coming from senior Alexis Platt.

Sam Porter led CNU (10-0) with 17 points to go along with nine rebounds and five steals. Devon Byrd posted a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds as Bailey Dufrene and Makenzie Fancher tallied 12 points each.

NiAsia Caldwell joined Harris in double figures with 10 points, corralling a team best of six rebounds.

Virginia Wesleyan (5-4) returns home on Monday, January 2 for a 6 p.m. non-conference start with N.C. Wesleyan (5-5). The Battling Bishops are also coming off a loss to Christopher Newport in their last game.
