Marlins Conclude Season in ODAC Quarters

WINCHESTER, Va. -- The No. 5 Virginia Wesleyan College field hockey team saw its season come to a close in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) quarterfinals Tuesday night, losing 5-1 to No. 4 Shenandoah University.

The Marlins concluded the regular season on Saturday when they hosted Shenandoah, falling to the Hornets 5-2 in that contest. This was the second straight year that the Marlins have made the ODAC tournament field after not playing in one since the 2011 campaign.

Despite six goals being scored in the game, only one came in the first half as Taylor Hayes found Kayla Alderman for her eighth goal of the season. That score, coming at 16:53, lasted until the second half when Katelyn Curtis found Morgan Payne three minutes into the final half.

Payne scored two more goals over the next four minutes to put the Hornets up 4-0 in the single elimination contest.

Melissa DeiTos scored the fifth goal for Shenandoah before the Marlins broke through at 65:07 when Asiah Allen found Caitlyn Hogge for the score.

Shenandoah (11-8) outshot the Marlins 19-8 and held a 15-7 advantage in penalty corners.

Jessica Brown made one stop for the Hornets while Skye Swain stopped six for VWC.

Virginia Wesleyan concludes the season with a 7-11 record, 4-4 in ODAC play. The four ODAC wins were the most for a Marlin squad since the 2011 team that finished 5-3.
