Box Score Cardinals Power Past Marlins 3-0
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College women's soccer team could not connect on several chances, falling to Catholic University 3-0 in a non-conference road contest.
The Marlins got off to a strong offensive attack with a shot attempt by Marli Hayward at the 2:09 mark. The ladies continued their quest for a goal with four other shot attempts in the first half but could not find the back of the net.
Catholic took advantage of a strong defensive effort, turning the field so Alexa Povelaitis could find Nia Gomez for a header and 1-0 lead at the 36:27 mark.
Virginia Wesleyan held the Cardinals without another goal until the 87th and 89th minute when Lindsay Aleman connected for a pair of goals.
Taylor Chapman made five saves for the Marlins, while Ally Marcello stopped a pair of attempts for Catholic (8-1).
Catholic held a 13-9 edge in shots and 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Virginia Wesleyan (5-4-1/2-0-1) will host Roanoke (3-4-3/2-1) at home on Oct. 8 at 5 p.m. in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) battle. It will be Homecoming for the Marlins.
