Marlins Drop Regular Season Finale to Hornets, 5-2

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College field hockey team endured another high scoring affair, falling to Shenandoah University 5-2 Saturday in the regular season conference finale.

The decision locked up the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) tournament seeding for both teams as the win makes the Hornets the No. 4 seed while the Marlins will be the No. 5 seed, primed for a rematch with Shenandoah on Tuesday.

Shenandoah scored the first goal of the game just under five minutes into action when Morgan Payne started a penalty corner, sent it in to Taylor Hayes, who gave it right back for a 1-0 lead.

Elizabeth Pardo found Maddie Lamarca at the 28 minute mark for a 2-0 lead and the halftime margin.

The Marlins broke through at 48:09 after falling behind 3-0, when Hunter Majewski found Taylor Marshall off a penalty corner.

Virginia Wesleyan added a second goal 14 minutes later when Morgan Lee found the back of the cage.

Hayes and Payne finished with a goal and an assist each for Shenandoah (10-8/5-3) with Jessica Brown stopping six shots in the cage. Skye Swain had nine saves for the Marlins.

Shenandoah led 17-12 in shots while the Marlins possessed an 11-5 edge in corners.

Virginia Wesleyan (7-10/4-4) will travel to Shenandoah University for an ODAC tournament quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday.
