Marlins Draw to Stay Unbeaten in ODAC Play

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan College women's soccer team scored a pair of goals and the defense did enough to pull out a 2-2 draw with league-leader Washington and Lee University on Saturday afternoon.

The Generals scored first when Caroline Peters found Megan Engeland 23 minutes into the contest. Engeland placed the ball in the lower corner after receiving an assist in the middle of the box from Peters.

The Marlins evened the score just 80 seconds later when freshman midfielder Ryan McCurry crossed the ball to the top of box for freshman forward Marli Hayward, who gathered and shot the ball just past goalkeeper Maggie Nolan at 24:20.

The second half went in similar fashion with one team scoring shortly after the other.

Virginia Wesleyan took its only lead of the game at 56:46 when Hayward scored for the second time on the afternoon. She blocked a clearing kick by the Generals and scored on an open look.

Six minutes later, the Generals answered as Chandler Wickers found Tricia Jessee for a rebounded shot that was headed past goalie Taylor Chapman.

Jessee had a chance to end the Marlins' hope of an upset with just 81 seconds remaining in regulation, but her header attempt hit the post.

The Generals attempted the only shot on goal in the first overtime period, but it was turned away by Chapman. Annie Hartman had an attempt at the goal in the second bonus session, but Nolan rejected the chance to guarantee the tie.

Nolan made three saves for Washington and Lee (10-3-1/6-1-1) while Chapman stopped four balls for Virginia Wesleyan.

The Generals held edges in shots, 15-9, and corner kicks, 9-2.

Virginia Wesleyan (8-4-3/5-0-3) hosts Sweet Briar College (1-14/0-8) Wednesday for a 4 p.m. Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match.
