Marlins Hang on for 3-2 Overtime Victory at Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan College women's soccer team scored twice early and held on late, putting away the game-winning score in overtime for a 3-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory.

The Marlins scored first at 11:49 when Brooke Adamchak found Ryan McCurry, who finished a rebound off the crossbar.

Virginia Wesleyan took advantage of a Bridgewater miscue just 23 seconds later, capitalizing on an own goal for a 2-0 lead.

Bridgewater had opportunities to cut into the lead in the first half as three of the Eagles' five shots came on goal, but all were saved by Taylor Chapman.

Bridgewater scored to get back into contention with a goal in the 63rd minute. Bridget Fabiani possessed the ball on the left side, dribbled past a defender and her shot from 18 yards out, where it went just over the keeper's hands and under the crossbar to make it a one-goal game, 2-1.

The Eagles scored the equalizer on a set piece in the 76th minute. The Eagles were awarded a corner and the kick settled in box in front of the goal. The Marlins were unable to clear and Isabella Krider touched the ball to Katherine Wight who was able to get the ball just past the goal line, tying the score at 2-2.

Virginia Wesleyan claimed the victory in overtime when as the Marlins pushed the ball into the offensive third and kept the pressure on the Eagles defense, finally earning a corner kick.

The Eagles cleared the ball out of the box, but Zoe Traficante lofted a shot just over the outstretched hand of Eagles' keeper Hayley Talbott, lifting the Marlins to the 3-2 victory.

Virginia Wesleyan held an edge in shots, 13-10, and corner kicks, 4-3.

Talbott finished with four saves for Bridgewater (11-3-1/4-2-1) while Chapman stopped four saves for the Marlins.

Virginia Wesleyan (8-4-2/5-0-2) travels to Washington and Lee University (10-3/6-1) Saturday for a 3 p.m. ODAC contest.
