Marlins Score First, Fall to W&L

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College field hockey team scored first on Saturday, but ultimately fell 9-1 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.

Senior Asiah Allen started the scoring on Saturday against Washington and Lee, one of the teams on top of the ODAC standings. Allen posted an unassisted tally at the six minute mark.

The Generals responded with a pair of goals in 70 seconds from 12:52 to 14:01 as Kendall Peterson found Maggie Waxter before Waxter sent a ball over to Allie DiPietro for the 2-1 lead. Washington and Lee scored three more goals in the first half before scoring four in the final period.

Waxter led the Generals with three goals and two assists, contributing on five of W&L's nine goals.

Washington and Lee (6-3/2-0) held a 22-7 lead in shots and 6-5 edge in penalty corners.

Ariyel Yavalar had five saves for the Generals while Skye Swain stopped nine shots for the Marlins.

Virginia Wesleyan (2-6/0-2) travels to Wesley College on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. non-conference start.
