Field Hockey Collects First 2015 Win with 4-0 Shutout of Hood
FREDERICK, Md. – The Virginia Wesleyan College field hockey team posted an impressive effort in the first road contest of the season, downing Hood College 4-0 on Saturday afternoon.
The Marlins scored early as Melissa Rideout attempted a shot that was saved by the Hood keeper, but Asiah Allen was right there to finish off the rebound just 2:38 into the contest.
The game would remain 1-0 until the waning minutes of the first half when Valentina Jones swept the ball in front of the cage to the far post where Taylor Marshall found the back of the net for an insurance tally for VWC.
Marshall continued the offensive onslaught from Virginia Wesleyan early in the second half with her second goal of the game, coming at 36:42, a minute after her first shot of the second half was turned away by keeper Haley Poisal.
Caitlyn Hogge scored the fourth and final goal for the Marlins at 67:55 as one of the 11 shots VWC attempted in the second half.
Virginia Wesleyan outshot Hood 27-2 and maintained an 11-2 edge in penalty corners.
Poisal made 16 saves for Hood (0-2) despite being under heavy duress throughout the contest.
Skye Swain made two saves to collect her first collegiate shutout. Marshall posted her first career multi-goal game in the victory.
Virginia Wesleyan (1-1) travels to Goucher College (0-1) for a 1 p.m. start Sunday afternoon.
