Midkiff Scores Two as Berry Downs Marlins 2-0

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Berry College's Maggie Midkiff scored a goal in each half Friday night as the Virginia Wesleyan College women's soccer team dropped the opening game of the Atlantic Orthopedic Specialists Classic by a 2-0 score.

Berry had the first look at the goal but was turned away by rookie keeper Alexis Wheeler. Two minutes later Midkiff would strike after getting a one on one opportunity with Wheeler.

The Marlins had a couple chances in the first half as a shot sailed wide shortly before an Ann Marie Moffett corner kick.

Midkiff tacked on another score as she directed a Michala Bibbins corner into the back of the net just under ten minutes into the second half.

Virginia Wesleyan tried to cut the deficit back to one, but Brittany Wentzel's shot was saved a little over a minute after Midkiff's score.

Wheeler made two saves for the Marlins. Virginia Wesleyan held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

The Marlins forced the Berry (1-0) keepers to make four saves in the second half.

Virginia Wesleyan (0-2) hosts Carthage College (0-2) on the final day of the tournament Saturday. First kick is scheduled for 6 p.m.
