Clunan Scores Two as Marlins hold off Hornets 2-1

WINCHESTER, Va. -- Senior Kaitlyn Clunan scored twice in the first half to help Virginia Wesleyan College edge past Shenandoah University 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play. 

The Marlins started the game firing offensively, taking 10 shots in the first half, with 4 going on target. Clunan opened up the scoring in the 12th minute, off of sophomore Zoe Trafficante's pass.

Sophomore Jennifer Nguyen of the Hornets equalized just under halfway through the first period of play only to have Clunan claim her second goal of the day a minute and two seconds later. 

The final 45 minutes of play went scoreless, with Shenandoah (3-6/0-1 ODAC) outshooting VWC 8-4, while the Marlins outshot the Hornets 14-12 on the afternoon. 

Junior keeper Erin Septer made five saves for the Hornets, as first-year Alexis Wheeler recorded two saves for the Marlins. 

Virginia Wesleyan (5-5/3-0) will be on the road at Eastern Mennonite University (1-7/0-1) for another ODAC game on Wednesday. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
