Marlins Hand R-MC First ODAC Loss with 1-0 Victory

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- First-year Madison Atkins scored in the 55th minute to push Virginia Wesleyan College past Randolph-Macon College 1-0 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play Tuesday night.

The Marlins jumped out to a quick start offensively, ripping seven shots in the first 15 minutes of play. Virginia Wesleyan controlled the majority of the half, outshooting the Yellow Jackets 10-1 in the first 45 minutes of play while forcing keeper Elizabeth Blanco into four saves.

Atkins ended the scoreless draw 10 minutes into the final half when she took a pass at the top of the box. She hesitated to her left, spun around to her right and took a shot with the defender on her back hip. Her attempt sailed to the left of Blanco and found the back of the net for the match's lone score.

Blanco finished with seven saves while Alexis Wheeler posted three stops in her registering her second shutout of the year.

VWC outshot Randolph-Macon (4-3/1-1 ODAC) 20-4 while maintaining a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.

Virginia Wesleyan (4-5/2-0) travels to Shenandoah University (3-5/0-0) for another ODAC contest on Saturday. First kick is scheduled for 4 p.m.
