Marlins Fall to No. 3 Salisbury in Afternoon Tilt

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- It took seven minutes for the first goal to be scored, but after that No. 3 Salisbury University put tallies on the board in bunches to defeat the Virginia Wesleyan College field hockey team by a score of 11-0 on Thursday afternoon.

The Sea Gulls proved why they were one of the top teams in the nation, striking quickly on offense with good ball movement and exceptional speed.

Becca Rinaca scored the first tally off an assist from Jessica Crew at the 7:25 mark. Salisbury scored six more in the first half to take a 7-0 lead as Sam Johnson scored two before intermission.

Catherine Sweeney added two scores in the second half, after scoring one late in the first, to pick up a hat trick.

Skye Swain made a career-high 22 saves for the Marlins while Eliza Pauk made two saves in the second half in relief of Salisbury (5-0) starter Tressie Windsor.

Virginia Wesleyan (1-4) travels to Washington College (2-2) for a 2 p.m. start Sunday afternoon.
